Position Responsibilities

This position operates under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant and may report directly to the Assistant Chief of Police or the Chief of Police. When needed, a Police Officer may also report to another Police Officer who serves as the shift supervisor (Officer in Charge) in the absence of a Police Sergeant. The individual may have direct authority over officers during their shift if designated as a shift supervisor (Officer in Charge) or assigned to lead a special task by the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, or a Sergeant. They also possess indirect authority over police volunteers, interns, or civilian personnel regarding matters that impact the safety of the officers. The following list of essential functions is meant to represent the tasks typically associated with this classification. However, it does not describe every specific position within the class. The absence of an essential function does not prevent management from assigning additional duties that are reasonably related to the position. 1. Complies with all Village policies and procedures, including those defined in the Village of Grafton Employee Handbook 2. Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in Village and department attendance policies and procedures. 3. Provides a variety of law enforcement services including patrolling streets and other public places on an assigned shift. 4. Performs activities associated with investigations and crime prevention; writes detailed police reports; collects physical evidence. Assists with filing cases; testifies in court. 5. Provides information, assistance or directions to the public; emphasizes community policing through public meetings and speaking directly with citizens; performs a variety of public relations and public education duties. 6. Intervenes in disputes, apprehends suspects, makes arrests, issues citations, identifies witnesses, conducts preliminary investigations, and re-establishes law and order at the scene. Interviews and/or counsels involved parties such as witnesses, suspects, students, and parents. Prepares documentation of activities performed and information gathered. Follows up on cases. Protects and preserves crime scenes. 7. Respond to calls for assistance, including assaults, fights, domestic disturbances, thefts, traffic accidents and traffic control, and other criminal or civil complaints; transport prisoners to detention facilities as necessary. 8. Interacts with other jurisdictions, law enforcement agencies, and courts of law. 9. Researches and completes special projects like policy and village ordinance development. 10. Works a varying schedule and/or shift. 11. May photograph and/or sketch crime scenes and accidents. 12. May be assigned to serve in the public schools as a School Resource Officer, as a member of the Special Response Team (SRT), motorcycle officer, K-9 officer, and/or Crisis Negotiation Team. May serve as a field training officer, acting field supervisor, police training instructor, department recruiter, or peer support team member. 13. May be required to work overtime. 14. Performs work requiring specified respiratory equipment that guards against exposure to airborne hazards. 15. Performs other duties as assigned. MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities. - Maintains contact with the general public, court officials, and other village officials when performing police operations. - Serves as a member of various employee committees.

Lateral Transfer Program Details:

Lateral consideration will be given to those who are currently serving as police officers and who have more than two years of experience. Applicants with 2 - 4.99 years of experience may be eligible to start at PO 2 ($79,526.90). Applicants with five or more years of experience may be eligible to begin at PO 3 ($84,376.10)
