Position Responsibilities

The Captain of Police is a top-level management law enforcement position within the Police Department, who is responsible for assisting the Chief of Police in discharging their duties and responsibilities, and if need be, assuming said duties and responsibilities in their absence. The Captain of Police is routinely responsible for both the administrative and operational direction and management of subordinate staff to ensure delivery of quality police services. The duties and responsibilities of this position involve, but are not limited to, providing preventive patrol, responding to calls for service, traffic enforcement, assisting police officers on calls for service, research, preparing reports and assignments, implementation of approved service plans; coordinating, directing, evaluating, mentoring, and supervising of subordinate staff; assisting in creating and meeting department goals, objectives and budget; commanding emergency situations; coordinating and/or conducting training.

  • Eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification

Other Qualifications
  • A minimum of five (7) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience.
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory level experience.
  • One (1) year of middle management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies, including involvement in criminal justice processes.
  • Other combination of training and/or experience can be demonstrated as a result in the possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position may also be considered.
  • Must be a certified law enforcement officer with the State of Wisconsin and maintain such certification.

60 college credits / Associate's degree
Additional Education Information
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university; emphasis or major in police science, criminal justice, police administration, justice administration or similar field is required. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.

Successful completion of basic two (2) week law enforcement supervisory school and/or leadership course.
