Responsibilities:
Takes action and enforces city ordinances, state statutes, and federal laws through the appropriate application of arrest, search, and seizure. Provides public safety through multiple proactive approaches. Conducts preliminary investigations by protecting the crime scene, processing for evidence, and interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects. Engages in positive, clear, and concise verbal communications with individuals when providing directions, collecting information, advising of rights and processes, or mediating disputes. Communicates in writing by preparing reports and records of activity with strong skills in organization, grammar, and spelling. Reviews/analyzes police-related reports and other relevant data in order to maintain a high degree of knowledge in criminal activity and/or other social concerns of interest to the police department. Makes necessary referrals and provides testimony when required. Provides first-responder emergency medical services through the use and application of first aid, CPR, and other trained medical skills. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors which require the knowledge, skills, and abilities of a police officer. These duties may include, but not limited to; traffic enforcement, training in various police tactics and procedures, and desk officer duties.
Lateral Transfer Program Details:
Although prior law enforcement experience is not required, the City of New Berlin cooperatively worked with the New Berlin Professional Police Association to contractually agree on a lateral hire program. Under this agreement, any sworn officer from Wisconsin or any sworn officer from another state who passes the reciprocity test, may receive a starting annual salary and a vacation allowance commensurate with their years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer. Lateral hires will also receive 82.5 hours of sick leave upon hire. Beyond those contractual agreements, lateral hires will be required to comply with the same processes as other new hires. Lateral hires will be required to pass the physical readiness test exit standards.
