Position Responsibilities

A deputy sheriff is assigned to filed duty which consists of both routine and complex law enforcement responsibilities.  General job functions include reporting and documentation, preservation of safety, and peace and security.  The employee normally works independently which necessitates a high degree of self-discipline, integrity and decision-making ability.  In addition to skills, knowledge and abilities natural to the police functions, there are specialized positions requiring other skills.  These positions consist of identification, warrant or civil process investigations, communications, juvenile, community service, property management, and training. Lateral Transfer Program Details:

1. Law Enforcement Represented Employees: A. Lateral Entry Law Enforcement Officers meeting the above qualifications upon hire shall receive 90% of the regular rate of pay. Upon completion of the FTO program, as determined by the Sheriff or designee, Officers shall receive 100% of the regular rate of pay for the classification as outlined in Addendum "A" of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. B. Lateral Entry Law Enforcement Officers may be extended Vacation benefits which commensurate with their prior full-time sworn law enforcement experience up to 10 years of service as outlined in Article 5 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. C. As of June 16, 2023, The Ashland County board approved the transfer of 400 hours of sick time from current employment agency. D. No other contractual benefits or privileges are extended to recognize prior service. Lateral entry officers shall be subject to the probationary period. E. The Lateral Entry Program compensation and benefits may be extended to current employees hired after January 1, 2013. However, the Association and current employees who are extended the Lateral Entry Program waive any claims for back wages or benefits as a result of this agreement.

2. Any employee who resigns or is terminated with less than one full year of service will not be eligible for compensation of enhanced earned vacation time benefit.
