Position Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The ability to: 1 operate a police vehicle under normal and adverse conditions. 2 communicate and activate the equipment in a police vehicle under normal and adverse conditions. 3 maintain a professional demeanor when confronted with stressful situations and faced with verbal oppositions and threats. 4 make quick decisions and process information based upon limited information. 5 follow instructions in oral and written form and the ability to apply the standards to a variety of situations. 6 recall from memory, details of persons and things. 7 reason, solve problems, formulate a plan of action to completion following a logical process. 8 Use good judgment, accepting criticism without becoming frustrated. 9 protect one's self and others by having a full range of movement, physical strength, endurance, fitness and condition. 10 be seated in a vehicle for prolonged periods of time. 11 run, climb, jump, grab, pull, lift, bend and exert one's self in a spontaneous or normal situation. 12 function for extended periods of time without fatigue breaks or requiring special needs or resources. 13 establish and maintain an effective working relationship, demonstrating sensitivity to the emotional state of others. 14 recognize persons, objects and situations from descriptions, being alert for details. 15 project a command presence, think quickly under pressure, inspire an attitude of confidence. 16 organize and present effective public relations programs and messages. 17 operate and utilize state-of-the-art and specialized equipment. 18 direct department operations, special events and operations. 19 utilize departmental and other resources in an effective, efficient and proper manner. 20 oversee and direct criminal and other investigations, including witnessing autopsies. 21 provide instruction and guidance to departmental personnel. 22 analyze statutes and case law. 23 recover and process evidence. 24 mediate disputes which might occur with and between general public. 25 secure, verify and process warrants and capias' of all kinds, including search warrants. 26 verify the reliability and credibility of witnesses, informants and others. NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Because each and every person is afforded certain Constitutional Rights and the Liberties guaranteed, the responsibilities of the Police Officer are such that all duties performed and all actions taken are crucial to the Right and Guarantees. Therefore, there are no Non-essential Responsibilities of this job. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to: 1 stand, walk, run, sit, balance, stoop, kneel, repeat bending, climb using legs and arms, climb inclines and stairs, crawl and reach. 2 lift and carry up to 65 pounds and 10 pounds routinely. 3 push and pull, including pulling hand over hand. 4 have the ability for rapid mental/muscular coordination simultaneously. 5 Have repetitive movement, twisting and pressure involving fingers, hands and wrists. 6 perform physical tasks which require both hands and legs. 7 have vision correctable to 20/25, near sighted and far sighted with depth perception and able to distinguish basic shades and colors. 8 hear, detect and comprehend audible sounds of conversation, electronic and radio signal tones and messages, correctable. 9 work in varying climate conditions. 10 utilize required protective equipment. 11 physically apprehend and control a person. TO DO THIS JOB YOU MUST BE ABLE TO: 1 communicate effectively orally and in writing in the English Language. 2 write legibility in the English language. 3 organize reports and other documents using basic rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation. 4 communicate with individuals and groups in a clear and concise manner. 5 copy written and oral information with a minimum of errors. 6 perform basic mathematical computations. 7 establish and maintain an effective working relationship, demonstrating sensitivity to the emotional state of others. 8 perform basic job tasks when faced with limited resources. 9 transpose written and oral information into a written report and keep accurate records. 10 work independently. 11 effectively handle handguns and shoulder fired weapons and other defensive equipment. 12 apprehend, arrest and take persons into custody. 13 provide first aid, including CPR. QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent, an Associates Degree or a minimum of 60 college level credits which are accepted by the State of Wisconsin Training and Standards Board as required training and certifiability as a police officer in the State of Wisconsin by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board. Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License or the ability to obtain one. Must have residency in the State of Wisconsin at the time of appointment, and must obtain residency as set forth in city ordinance during the probationary period and maintain such residency continuously throughout employment. CONTINUING EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee must successfully complete and maintain; Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification, State of Wisconsin Breath Testing Certification Course, State of Wisconsin Radar Operator’s Course, maintain Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Annual Re-certification, and any other mandated or requested education or training.
