Position Responsibilities

This position is located within the Division of Public Safety and Resource Protection (DPSRP), Recreational Safety and Outdoor Skills (RSOS) Bureau, providing leadership and direction for the DPSRP’s comprehensive recreational incident investigations, enforcement, and specialized training program while ensuring consistency, effectiveness, efficiency and accountability in all associated program activities. This position is part of a specialized statewide team tasked with conducting and coordinating fatal/complex recreational crash and hunting incident investigations associated with criminal or potential criminal charges. This position serves as the law enforcement safety specialist with responsibility for coordinating a comprehensive recreational safety, training, enforcement, crash/hunting incident investigative program within assigned administrative area. This program consists of specialized areas focused on hunting and off-highway vehicles (ATV, UTV, OHM, snowmobile, boats) as well as other outdoor recreational activities. Provide expertise, training and assistance in hunting incidents and off highway vehicle crash investigations. Train and provide guidance to our field conservation wardens as well as local and county law enforcement patrols on recreational vehicle use, trends, enforcement, tactics and investigations. Develop an informational service to include media relations, preventative enforcement and recreational safety messaging. This position is responsible for ensuring consistent application of all laws, department policies, and procedures for recreational vehicles within the DPSRP’s law enforcement program. This position requires close working relationships with RSOS program administrators, conservation wardens, warden supervisors, other program staff, recreational patrols, agency managers, and staff from local, state, federal and tribal governments. As a credentialed conservation warden, this position has authority for enforcing all laws of the State while on department managed properties and is the principal enforcement officer for all laws administered by the Department of Natural Resources throughout Wisconsin. This is a sworn law enforcement position, with the authority and obligation to effectuate arrests, which requires certification as a sworn law enforcement officer. This position may spend a significant amount of time in travel status, especially for training events or deployments. All trainings and deployments are work-assignments and compensated consistent with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan and DNR/DPSRP policies. This position has access to criminal justice information systems and/or secured areas where criminal justice information is stored.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

Other Qualifications
  • Must meet Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification requirements as a current law enforcement officer or eligible for certification through State of Wisconsin Department of Justice reciprocity.
  • Experience enforcing laws (i.e., effecting arrests, search, and seizure, issuing citations, etc.) as a certified law enforcement officer
  • Experience with outdoor recreation (e.g. participation in outdoor hobbies like boating, ATV/UTV operation, snowmobiling, etc. and/or certification, training, or education in outdoor recreation activities).
  • Experience collaborating with internal and/or external stakeholders, working with teams or team sports, etc.
  • Experience enforcing laws (i.e., effecting arrests, search, and seizure, issuing citations, etc.) as a certified law enforcement officer whose primary duty/emphasis was the enforcement of outdoor recreation/natural resource-related laws (rec patrol)
  • Law enforcement training and/or experiences specific to investigating crashes (vehicles, recreational vehicles: ATV, UTV, OHM, snowmobiles, boats, etc.).
  • Experience teaching, training, guiding, mentoring, and/or coaching others in a professional work environment.
