Personnel in this assignment are responsible for community patrol, criminal investigations including search and seizures, evidence collection, affidavits and search warrants, traffic enforcement, special event assignments, and law enforcement activities in the interest of maintaining law and order, suppressing crime, and protecting life and property. The SHPD works with a focus on community policing.

Lateral Transfer Program Details:

Lateral transfer refers to an applicant who is currently employed full-time at a municipal, county, state police agency or has successfully completed the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Academy Program. Successful lateral candidates will start at an accelerated pay scale compared to entry level candidates. Vacation time will also be adjusted according to police experience. Your total years of sworn law enforcement experience will place you in the respective pay step below: Salary Range as of 1/1/2026: Prior 1 year of service - 79,197.91.00 2 years of service - 84,709.99 3 years of service - 90,222.06 4 years of service - 95,733.65 Vacation Allowance: Lateral transfers will receive recognition equal to the number of full years of service as a full-time sworn law enforcement officer, as it relates to the collective bargaining agreement. Sick Leave: Lateral transfers will receive an advance of 41.5 hours of sick leave upon hiring.
