Responsibilities:
Patrol Officer. Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, investigation of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. An employee of this rank may be assigned to uniformed patrol, crime prevention, investigative work, juvenile work, or other specialized departmental activity. Work involves an element of personal danger in the pursuit of duties. Officers must exercise independent judgment in meeting both routine and complex emergency situations and act without direct supervision. A significant portion of time involves public contact where discretion and tact is to be conscientiously exercised.
Lateral Transfer Program Details:
Lateral transfers will be required to have the same qualifications and follow the same application process as all new hires, including successfully completing the application, written test and staff interview. Candidates will be required to pass the Police Commission interview, background check and conditional offer evaluations. For purposes of this section, lateral transfers shall be defined as certified Police Officers working for another Police Department for a minimum of two (2) years full-time or with approval from Police Chief. Lateral transfers shall be evaluated for previous service to determine commensurate pay and vacation. The Police Chief shall make the determination for placement on the current wage and vacation schedule. Lateral members will be placed on the seniority schedule based on their date of hire with the Department. Lateral transfers are eligible for full wage and vacation benefits based on experience. Vacation time is awarded at hire but cannot be utilized during Field Training.
