Cross Plains is a busy, growing community located just west of Madison. Our department is professional, motivated, and holds a strong family atmosphere. Our Sergeant of Police will be responsible for overseeing the patrol divison, reporting to the Chief of Police. The Sergeant of Police must promote effective productivity through teamwork and unity of purpose. The Sergeant of Police will be responsible for reviewing reports, attending meetings, managing extra assignments, responding to calls for service, serve as the lead investigator, and acting as scene commander in lieu of the Chief of Police.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to perform essential functions of this position
  • Ability to possess a firearm
  • Ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment
  • Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Clear and concise speech
  • Driver's license
  • Eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification
  • Good driving record
  • Good physical condition
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and skills in operating computer systems
  • No domestic abuse convictions
  • No felony convictions
  • Previous experience
  • React quickly and effectively to stressful situations
  • U.S. citizen
  • Vision correctable to 20/20

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws
  • Ability to deal effectively with people and lead a team
  • Ability to analyze situations and make decisions based on facts and circumstances
  • Ability to earn respect of subordinate officers and maintain good working relationships with all members of the department
  • Ability to demonstrate good management and leadership qualities
  • Ability to motivate personnel to perform their assigned duties
  • Supervisory experience preferred but not required
