Position Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Patrol Lieutenant, the First Shift Patrol Sergeant serves as shift commander and is responsible for directing all law enforcement and security activities during their assigned shift and while acting as Staff Duty Officer. This position supervises Police Officers assigned to DOA-owned and leased facilities, including the State Capitol, conducts performance evaluations, issues verbal and written reprimands, and recommends suspension or termination for cause. The Sergeant arranges schedules, coordinates field operations and criminal investigations, maintains liaison with local law enforcement agencies, courts, and other partners, and serves as a key point of contact with State of Wisconsin stakeholders. The role ensures subordinate officers comply with Wisconsin and Federal statutes, department rules, policies, and objectives while delivering professional law enforcement services to the public.

  • Eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification

  • No domestic abuse convictions

  • React quickly and effectively to stressful situations
  • U.S. citizen

  • Qualified applicants will currently be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB), or eligible for certification within 30 days of application, or currently enrolled in a 720-hour Law Enforcement Academy
