Forward Together! UW Oshkosh Police Department Community Service Officers (CSO) ensure safety and protection by promoting an environment that is conducive to personal growth in an academic community setting. CSOs are non-sworn Police Department employees that work in conjunction with officers of the UW Oshkosh Police Department by reporting all observed or known violations of university rules, regulations, and state laws. The CSO position is an excellent way for criminal justice majors to gain experience and knowledge in the field of law enforcement, but is also an excellent way for those pursuing other majors to gain experience and skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and interacting with a wide variety of people.
The UW Oshkosh Police Department recruits quality applicants for the CSO Program on a continuous basis. Applications are accepted throughout the year and will be kept on file until a hiring process takes place. Department personnel will be in contact once the application and requested documents are received. In order to be considered for employment in the CSO Program, you must be: Eligible for employment in the U.S.; At least 18 years of age; Currently enrolled at the UW-Oshkosh, Fox Valley Technical College, Moraine Park Technical College or other UW System schools (with a minimum of 6 credits); Of good character and free of any felony convictions; Of exceptional organizational and observation skills; A good verbal and written communicator; Able to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations; Able to handle several tasks simultaneously; Able to use necessary equipment; Free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect performance as a Community Service Officer; Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities:
CSOs are trained to provide security at residence halls and to patrol the campus during the evening and night hours with the assistance of a partner. While on patrol, CSOs perform a variety of duties including: assisting officers or staff members when requested; responding and assisting at fire and medical calls; enforcing parking regulations; and reporting any activity that is suspicious or illegal. In addition, CSOs report any maintenance, security, or safety problems they may find during their shift. During patrol shifts, CSOs check all residence halls and university buildings to ensure that they are secure. CSOs perform the function of Night Security in the residence halls; checking IDs in order for people to gain access to the halls, and as security for athletic events and other special events. UWO GO (the campus safe-ride program) is also staffed and managed by CSOs. CSOs are supplied with uniforms, a duty belt, and other equipment necessary to effectively perform their job. They are given a variety of training, such as: defense tactics, to include use of a baton and chemical agents; conflict resolution; CPR; and customer service.
