Position Responsibilities

This is a patrol position and will be responsible for providing a variety of patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities in the interest of maintaining law and order, suppressing crime, and protecting life and property. The work involves the following types of activities: arrest and detention, search and seizure; criminal investigations; evidence collection; patrol operations; traffic and OWI enforcement; traffic accident investigations; use of firearms and weapons; first aid/first responder situations; conflict mediation/civil disorder; crime prevention and community relations; and court functions. The SHPD works with a focus on community policing. Currently under contract negotiations, the expected wage as of January 1, 2026, is $31.36 to $39.33 per hour. The department also operates a Drone Unit and is in the process of developing a K9 Unit, offering additional opportunities for specialized training and assignments. SIGN-ON BONUS OF $5,000.

Lateral Transfer Program Details:

Experienced Officers may be eligible for advanced placement on pay, sick leave and vacation grids. Field training programs are personalized to the applicant's needs
