Course Description

In the 200-Hour Jail Academy you will learn: Key concepts and requirements underlying county jail operations and an introduction to the role of the jail officer as a corrections professional. Issues covered include the purposes and goals for county jails, and the role of state and national standards for jail operations. The professional responsibilities of a jail officer. This course also features an overview of the curriculum and premises of the basic jail officer training course. This 5-week course is open to both pre-service and hired jail officers and is offered one time per year during the summer.

Prerequisites

Complete form DJ-LE-310, Student Authorization for Release of Information Pre-Service students complete DJ-LE-327 Student application for enrollment. Sign the Jail Officer Code of Ethics. Pre-Service students complete an oral interview with a panel of criminal justice executives and teaching or counseling staff affiliated with the academy. Undergo a criminal history records check. An unpardoned felony conviction, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence conviction as defined in 18 USC 921(a)(33), or conviction of a crime that falls under the definition of domestic abuse as defined in § 968.075(1)(a), Wis. Stats., or a conviction that is subject to the imposition of the domestic abuse surcharge under § 973.055(1), Wis. Stats., regardless of whether any part of the surcharge was waived by the court under § 973.055(4), Wis. Stats., will prohibit an applicant from taking part in jail and/or juvenile detention officer training and will prohibit employment as a jail and/or juvenile detention officer. Undergo a medical assessment. A medical assessment will be conducted to verify the applicant can meet the physical standards required to complete the academy. The assessment will be conducted by a licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner utilizing the Medical Assessment form (DJ-LE-332), which provides the physician with a description on which to base the assessment. Be at least 18 years of age, and complete form DJ-LE-322, Birth Certificate Verification, to provide verification of age. Possess a general educational development diploma or be a high school graduate who has completed a secondary education program through a public school, private school, an equivalency diploma program, or home education program within the United States or its territories or a foreign country.
