Job Summary: The Chief of Police position is responsible for the direction of all operations of the Red Cliff Tribal Police Department. Responsibilities include, monitoring of all departmental personnel to ensure work performance meets standards set forth by the Red Cliff Tribal Police Department and State of Wisconsin. The Chief of Police reviews and assures all requests for assistance are completed in a timely fashion and all necessary reports are accurately completed. The Chief of Police establishes department goals, priorities, and implements policies. The Chief of Police is responsible to the Red Cliff Tribal Council and the Law Enforcement Commission. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Duties and Responsibilities as Patrol: 1. Enforce Tribal codes and ordinances on the Red Cliff Reservation. 2. Enforce State laws on the Red Cliff Reservation. 3. Enforce Tribal and State Court Orders on the Red Cliff Reservation. 4. Patrol the Red Cliff Reservation and investigate complaints on the Reservation. 5. Perform the preliminary and follow-up investigation at the scene of an accident or reported incident(s). 6. Provide first aide in emergency situations and call in additional medical/rescue help as needed. 7. Provide crime prevention assistance to persons on the Reservation. 8. Work with Tribal agencies to develop and implement juvenile intervention programs. 9. Conduct programs with schools to promote greater understanding between youth and Law Enforcement. 10. May be called upon to appear in court to testify. 11. Must be willing and able to obtain additional education/training. 12. Must maintain detailed written log record of on-duty activities and reports of all official action taken in accordance with the guidelines and procedures of the Red Cliff Tribal Police Department. 13. Other duties and responsibilities on the reservation as directed by the Red Cliff Tribal Police Commission and Red Cliff Tribal Council Additional Duties and Responsibilities of the Chief of Police: 1. Serve as a supervisor to all sworn police officers providing the daily delivery of police services. 2. Assign personnel to patrol for the prevention of crime, the apprehension of criminals, and the detection of crimes that have been committed. 3. Formulate department policies, regulations, goals, procedures and program priorities in accordance with the State, Federal, Tribal and local laws and regulations. 4. Maintain records of department needs for the preparation of the annual budget. 5. Review prepared records for training needs and attendance in training sessions by department personnel and ensure accuracy. 6. Provide backup to patrol officers as required. 7. Prepare annual review of the department’s long-range plans and goals. 8. Attend pertinent meetings as assigned or required. 9. Other duties and responsibilities on the reservation as directed by the Red Cliff Tribal Police Commission and Red Cliff Tribal Council. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: All staff of the Red Cliff Law Enforcement Department. KNOWLEDGE: 1. Knowledge of standards by which quality police services are evaluated. 2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of crime prevention, detection and criminal investigation. 3. Knowledge of Federal laws of criminal justice and of state and local laws as they apply to the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. 4. Knowledge of supervision and considerable knowledge of techniques and procedures used to measure and improve productivity. 5. Knowledge of principles, techniques and procedures used to evaluate individual and department work performance. 6. Knowledge of general methods of apprehension and physical control of unruly persons. 7. Thorough knowledge of the Tribal Codes and Ordinances, policies, goals and objectives of the Red Cliff Tribal Police Department.

Qualifications:

Qualifications
  • Ability to perform essential functions of this position
  • Ability to possess a firearm
  • Ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment
  • Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Driver's license
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • No felony convictions
Other Qualifications
  • Professional mature adult, Tribal preference applies. Member of the Red Cliff Tribe, where possible.
  • Must hold current certification in the State of Wisconsin
